Кузькина мать / Kuzka’s Mother (2002)

Info & Files

About the Russian national idea; reflections on the Теракт на Дубровке (2002 Nord-Ost siege) victimizing 130 hostages.

On October 29, 2002, I picked up Mischa from a violin lesson with Prof. Rausch at the Dortmund School of Music (Musikhochschule Dortmund). On Autobahn 45 on the way to Herdecke, where we lived, I told him what had happened in Moscow. I also told about Khrushchev’s “Мы вам еще покажем Кузькину мать!” and his speech at the UN on October 12, 1960, where he, according to some legends, banged his shoe on the podium. This event shocked my father’s colleagues at the UNESCO and impressed me, eight years old, as embodying the policies of the USSR. We started singing “Мы покажем кузькину мать” to the Beatles tune “We all live in the Yellow Submarine”. Misha asked, “Could you write a song like that?” I said “Yes”.

Words and music by Andranik Tangian, Düsseldorf, November 14, 2002. Arranged together with Jürgen Grimm. Vocals: Andranik and Mischa Tangian; brass instruments: Ansgar Striepens and Frank Wellert; guitar: Werner Neumann; piano and bass programmed by Jürgen Grimm.; recorded by Reinhard Kobialka at the Topaz Audio Studios, Cologne, April 2007.
